چکیده
Olfaction is ingrained into the fabric of our daily lives and constitutes an integral part perceptual reality. Within this reality, there are crossmodal interactions sensory expectations; understanding how olfaction interacts with other modalities crucial for augmenting interactive experiences more advanced multisensorial capabilities. This knowledge will eventually lead to better designs, engaging experiences, enhancing perceived quality experience. Toward end, authors investigated a range correspondences between ten olfactory stimuli different (angularity shapes, smoothness texture, pleasantness, pitch, colors, musical genres, emotional dimensions) using sample 68 observers. Consistent were obtained in all cases, including novel modality (the texture). These associations most likely mediated by both odor’s identity underlying hedonic ratings: plays role when judging dimensions but not angularity or pitch. Overall, hedonics was dominant mediator correspondences.

Smelling shapes: crossmodal correspondences between odors and shapes.
Crossmodal correspondences between odors and visual stimuli-particularly colors-are well-established in the literature, but there is a paucity of research involving visual shape correspondences. Crossmodal associations between 20 odors (a selection of those commonly found in wine) and visual shape stimuli ("kiki"/"bouba" forms-Köhler W. 1929. Gestalt psychology. New York: Liveright.) were inves...

In many everyday situations, our senses are bombarded by many different unisensory signals at any given time. To gain the most veridical, and least variable, estimate of environmental stimuli/properties, we need to combine the individual noisy unisensory perceptual estimates that refer to the same object, while keeping those estimates belonging to different objects or events separate. How, thou...

In a recent article, N. Bien, S. ten Oever, R. Goebel, and A. T. Sack (2012) used event-related potentials to investigate the consequences of crossmodal correspondences (the "natural" mapping of features, or dimensions, of experience across sensory modalities) on the time course of neural information processing. Then, by selectively lesioning the right intraparietal cortex using transcranial ma...

Crossmodal music-to-color correspondences are mediated by emotion for classical music (Palmer et al., 2013) and diverse other genres. People tend to choose colors as going best with music when both have similar emotional associations (e.g., happy-looking colors go best with happy-sounding music). Lower level musical stimuli, including single-line melodies, two-note intervals, and instrumental t...
متن کاملLessons In Smelling Essays on Olfactory Perception
This three-paper dissertation focuses on olfactory perception, with each paper exploring an ongoing debate in the perceptual literature through the olfactory 'lens'. Philosophers of perception have typically assumed what I call the Unification Thesis: the thesis that certain philosophical issues about perception should be settled in the same way for each of the sensory modalities. I argue that ...
